Is it tacky or cute if we match for formal?

my semi formal is coming up and i just got my dress. its dark purple with gold shimmer on it. and my boyfriend wants to wear a matching color. he was gonna get the same color as me...but he ended up getting a lilac/light purple shirt. and his tie is balck with light purple and dark purple designs (same color as my dress) would this look cute together...or just tacky? im not so sure about it but i dont want to hurt is feelings or anything. what do u think? thanks so much for the help :)

As long as he looks GOOD, then it won't be tacky. But if it looks a little silly or if the colors are more like circus colors, then you probably don't want to do that. I do think that it's very sweet that he wants to match you!! if you aren't sure, then try taking a photo together while wearing the outfits. Then you can see for yourself before the big day comes.

Reply:Some people may think it is tacky, but personally I think it looks great in the pictures. Kinda like at a wedding, the tux matches the bridesmaids.
Reply:I hate to say it, but he should get a black shirt with a dark purple tie with a gold tie pin. No light purple. That's my advice .

Reply:I think he should just match his tie to your dress rather than the shirt being purple as well. If his tie is similar to your dress I think that will look cute and reinforce that you are a couple at the formal, but if he looks too 'matchy' it might look a bit lame. By the way your dress sounds nice!
Reply:cute but dont go over board just make suttle things match...like my ex boyfriend and i in high school i wore a red dress and he wore black shirt and pants with the stiching red and i had black shoes and purse it was way cute
