Good Experience at David's Bridal, I think...?

Just wanted to say that I had my alterations done at David's Bridal yesterday. My experience was good, I think. I was told that alterations for a hem were $75 but she said because my dress is not a straight dress it is $95 with tax it came to $102. Has anyone had this happen to them, were they changed the price? I'm not complaining because my dress is still going to be pretty but it was a weird feeling that came over me. This is my dress but it will be with a lilac sash, you can view it in an alternate view to see the bottom of my dress. http://davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_det... or http://davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_det...

Do you think that is a high price for a hem?

Good Experience at David's Bridal, I think...?
Considering that the dress is priced at $299, I think that a third of that price ($102) is a bit excessive. There's no lace at the bottom of the dress that a seamstress needs to be worked around - pretty simple hem.
Reply:Not a big price at all. Sometimes they don't know what they are getting into for the alterations til they actually start on the dress, so I wouldn't quibble over the extra 20.
Reply:aawww i love simple dresses. that is such an elegant look... i think its a little high for a simple hem... i heard many horror stories about david's bridal but overall when i went there they had some very fair priced wedding gowns... good luck to you and the MISTER!!! God Bless
Reply:that is a very high price for a hem, but since you got the dress there and had it altered there, you should expect to be price-gauged. bridal shops do this often. it's not right, but it's somehow accepted.
Reply:lovely dress by the way!

i dont like bridal warehouse and i think you paid too much for alterations. if you would have taken your dress to a local ma and pa store, it would have been about fifty bucks or so.
Reply:I just paid $195 for my hem, sides taken in and bustle.

I think it was $120 for just my hem. It's a pretty penny to get wedding dresses altered.
Reply:I think is sounds more than reasonable
Reply:I think it's reasonable for David's. I think they over charge for alterations, that's why I'm not going to have my dress done by them. That's just my opinion though.

As for the price change. It's been my experience that anytime a seamstress gives you a price, it's always a 'ball park' figure. There's a lot of work involved, and the more work, the higher price. That being said, I think David's should have told you that "Hem alterations START at $75".

It's a beautiful dress! I wish I could pull off strapless.

Good luck, and Congratulations!
Reply:It does sound fishy that they raised the price on you after the fact. What is a "straight" wedding dress anyway? I haven't seen many of those and they obviously knew the shape of your dress when you set up the alterations. You should contact the manager about it, but since you already paid you might not get much help from them. Good luck.
Reply:It's a high price, but the work is 100% guaranteed. If they mess it up, they WILL replace the dress. When she said that your dress "wasn't straight," she probably meant that the hem had to be tapered back due to it having a train, not meaning it was crooked.

The only problem I see is that we don't ever charge tax on alterations in the DB stores here in AZ but that may just depend on where you live.
Reply:I think that is a rather high price for your hem. I got my dress at a bridal shop near me (with price ranges the same as David's Bridal) and they charge a MAXIMUM of $120 for alterations. If the store orders the dress in the closest size possible, much less to nothing would have to be done to the dress. A hem COULD be expensive if there was a lot of beading because each bead has to be taken off individually and then sewn back on individually (can you imagine?!) but your dress doesn't have that, as it is simple. I think you got ripped off a bit, but . . . that's just me. It's not near as bad as other rip-off stories I've heard. You can talk to a manager and see what can be done for you. Tell them the quoted price and the actual price. Many stores like to keep their customers happy, but there is no guarantee they would refund you any money. It's worth a try though if you are concerned.

Just get everything in writing from now on. And dont' worry too much about it. What's done is done and I'm sure you will look gorgeous in your dress!
Reply:I think it's a fair price, but I would get any further arrangements with them in writing, so they don't change anything else on you. Your dress is beautiful and I wish you the best!
Reply:Going with Mother M on this one. 1/3 the dress is excessive; however, that said, that's how David's Bridal gets away with selling its dresses for such a low cost. They charge extra for hems and other alterations. My friends all got their hemming/alterations included in the price of their gown.

But that said, I'd be more annoyed that they said it was going to be one price and charged you another. They should know how much it costs for your dress and should have given you the hemming at the cost they quoted.
Reply:I think that is a reasonable price...the only thing I don't see, and perhaps it is just me, is why she would charge you more because your dress isn't straight at the bottom...looks like it is a pretty straight and simple dress to me....

But, all things considering, that is a good price. If any other alterations need to be done they really shouldn't be that much since the dress is so simple to work with.

It really is a beautiful dress by the way. I think that the lilac sash is going to look gorgeous!

Good luck to you :)
Reply:It's a beautiful dress. The price sounds about right.
