I have kept a female budgie and a male cockatiel for 4 years now.
I am thinking of getting a hawkhead parrot or a lilac crowned amazon parrot or perhaps both . I am wondering am I ready for those ?
Amazon Parrot and Hawk Head Parrot , Am I ready for those ?
The Lilac Crowned Amazon is not a large parrot... as some of the previous posters seemed to indicate. Lilac Crowns are a smaller Amazon and have a reputation for being more shy, more docile, and "less loud" compared to other Amazons. I was nervous when I first brought Leela home... I had only had smaller birds before, but it was perfect. Amazons are amazons... they are not cuddle bugs, they like to paly, can be stubborn, but they are very loyal and intelligent! I have only seen Hawk Heads and have never had one as a pet, but they are beautiful birds (and very expensive!).
Whatever you choose, I wish you the very best!

Reply:Only you can answer that question.
We don't know anything about you besides that you've owned two small birds.
A friend of mine owns a lovebird - but if you saw the condition this bird and its cage was in (TOTALLY INADEQUATE) you would never recommend the person ever get another pet period - let alone a large parrot that requires an extremely diversified diet, a ton of attention, time and training, a large cage with a huge supply of toys to keep it occupied while you're away, etc.
It's a big decision.. but unfortunately it's not one any of us can make for you.
A cockatiel is completely different from either of the parrots you mentioned.
My suggestion would be to go for something like a Caique or a Senegal first.
I believe that is a step up from a cockatiel - but not a LEAP like an amazon or a hawk-head would be.
Reply:I really don't recall the Hawk Headed Parrots personality attributes, but I can definitely help with the amazon.
If you are prepared to buy an extremely large cage, possibly two, (try www.bird.com or www.featherfarm.com) and to consistently buy your birds toys. Give them a specific diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, pellets, and even certain seed mixes as treats. If you can give them at least one hour of time out of their cage every day with human interaction and don't mind taking a few bites from a frightened bird, then yes, you can probably handle it.
These birds are known for going through toys very quickly. It also depends on your birds individual personality, as well. Some of my parrots shred wood like it's paper, and others would prefer to only nibble.
It honestly is a life style change to take care of these parrots, they are like children. They need supervision, play time, and a lot of love and patience.
Get your birds after they are done being hand fed from an accredited breeder. If you can get them near you, have the breeder teach you how to hand feed yourself so you can do it for the last couple weeks. This is a great boding between the owner and the bird.
As for the noise level, expect it during the morning and afternoon when you come home from work. The amazon is probably going to yell words more than anything if it's anything like ours. I don't think the lilac crowned is as loud as some of the other breeds like the double yellow headed, yellow naped, ect.
Good luck :]
Reply:i would not recommend parrots to anyone. they are loud and obnoxious and they make huge messes and wake you up in the morning. my bfs grandfather has a sun conior and 2 african greybacks and they drive me mental!
Reply:If you do get a big parrot dont forget they are very demanding creatures, it will talk eventually but i think for what you have would be enough
